Patton Watkins Building

One lot not filled by a building on the main street until after World War II was the office now owned by Patton Watkins, Architect.  The one-story building was built in 1947 and the lease was given to Louise R. Culpepper.  Two years later it moved from her to Mr. W. Hoyt Baker (not to be confused with Henry P. Baker or his cafe) and was renewed ten years later.  In 1958 a beauty parlor opened and was run for years by Mrs. Loftis.

Following her retirement, a man referred to as "the Clock Doc" had a business doing over the insides of antique cars.  Jill Carpenter heard he did the dashboard in the car used in the movie "Driving Miss Daisy."

After his departure, Jill Carpenter opened a bookstore in the building for used and old books that she shipped all over the country.  Her husband Ronn and Jill refurbished the apartment in the back part of the building and added a screened porch across the back. It has been rented at various times, short-term.  Carpenter's business lasted 3.5 years, and eventually Patton Watkins moved his office into the space.
