The University of the South at Sewanee was founded prior to the introduction of electricity and telephones. The telegraph lines followed railroads and communication moved quickly along those wires. When the village began, there was no need for Duck River Electric Company or its power station, located at the top of downtown, below the Parish church. The offices of Duck River have been moved to a new location on Highway 41A, and its office builiding on University Avenue houses the Tower Community Bank ATM machine now.
